Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov renewed his country's call for an immediate ceasefire in the Karabakh region.

According to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, reported by Sputnik, Lavrov and the European Union Commissioner for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell discussed, during a phone call, the situation in the Karabakh region, where the need for an immediate and complete ceasefire was emphasized.

The statement indicated that Lavrov and Borrell confirmed their support for the Minsk Group's call to halt the escalation.

It is noteworthy that the Minsk Group for Conflict Settlement in Karabakh was formed in 1992 and includes a number of member states of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and is jointly chaired by Russia, the United States and France.

Earlier today, Lavrov called in two separate contacts with the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jehun Piramov and Armenian Zurab Mnatsakyanian for an immediate ceasefire in the Nagorno Karabakh region and a return to dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
