Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron called in a phone call today to an immediate ceasefire in the Karabakh region.
In a statement by the Kremlin in this regard, reported by Russia Today, Putin and Macron discussed "the sharp escalation in the conflict zone in Karabakh and expressed their concern about the continuing fighting there."
According to the statement, the two presidents called on “the two parties to the conflict to immediately cease fire and prevent escalation,” and stressed that there is no alternative to settling the conflict in Karabakh through political and diplomatic means.
The situation in the Nagorno Karabakh region witnessed a sudden military escalation last Sunday, at a time when the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides exchanged accusations about the reasons for the escalation. These developments came two months after a similar escalation in the border region between Armenia and Azerbaijan in mid-July, where the two parties exchanged accusations of causing it.
