In June 2021, the United Nations General Assembly will elect five member states to sit on the Security Council, which has a total of ten non-permanent members with overlapping two-year terms.

"

My country will follow the same steps and principles on which it was founded to maintain peace and security in the world in cooperation with the members of the Council,

" UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed said in New York. Al Nahyane.

"

We confirm that the Emirates will work to resolve the important issues facing the states with determination and resolve,

" he said, according to the official UAE news agency WAM on Tuesday.

The role of the Emirates on the world diplomatic scene has been strengthened in recent months with the announcement of the normalization of relations between the Gulf country and Israel, a major political change that has also been adopted by neighboring Bahrain.

The deal brokered by the United States encompasses four countries that share a common hostility towards Iran, which Washington has put under economic and diplomatic pressure.

According to WAM, the UAE's campaign for the seat on the Security Council would focus on "

efforts to advance integration, spur innovation, build resilience and secure peace

."

The Emirates last served on the Security Council in 1986-1987.

Five countries - Great Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - are permanent members, which gives them the right to veto draft resolutions.
