A Belgian court has ruled that 52-year-old Dolphin Boel should be awarded the title of Princess of Belgium.

Boel is the daughter of former King of Belgium Albert II of Novel about 40 years ago.

Last January he admitted that he was her father, after fighting the paternity claim for over a decade.

According to the ruling, she is entitled to bear the title and rights like the rest of his children from his legal marriage.

Boel's mother, Baroness Sybil de Celice Longcamps, claimed to have had an 18-year affair with Albert even before he was crowned king.

Rumors of the girl Albert brought with her first surfaced in an unauthorized biography of his wife, Queen Paula, published in 1999.

During an interview she gave in 2005, Boel first claimed that King Albert II was her biological father.

But only after he resigned in 2013, then lost his immunity to justice, did she initiate legal proceedings.

Her lawyer Mark Whitendella told reporters she was happy with the court's decision.

"A judicial victory will never replace the father's love, but it offers a sense of justice," he said.

"Many more children who have gone through similar hardships may find the strength to deal with them."

Boal and her two children will be able to bear the father's last name, Sachs-Coburg.

As a result of the ruling, after the king's death she would be entitled to an inheritance, which she would share along with his other three children, Prince Lauren, Princess Astrid and Philip, the current king.

Despite her new title, Boal will not receive any royal contribution.

However, Albert has to pay almost 3.4 million euros to cover her legal fees.

Her mother, Baroness Longcamps, says that her affair with Albert, then Prince of Liege, lasted from 1966 to 1984, and that he was around Boel's childhood.

After the death of his older brother in 1993, at the age of 62, Albert unexpectedly came to the throne.

He held the position until July 2013, when he announced his resignation - he said due to ill health - and was replaced by his son Philip.

The 86-year-old former king has previously opposed court orders to undergo a DNA test until he faces fines of 5,000 euros a day for refusing to do so.

In January he announced that he was accepting Mrs Boell as her fourth child after "studying the results of DNA tests".

Belgium has a constitutional monarchy in which the king plays a largely ceremonial role.
