Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, called for an immediate ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, expressing their concern over the transfer of militants from Syria and Libya to fight in the region.
Russia Today quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement that “Lavrov and Zarif conducted a phone call today, during which they discussed in detail the situation in the conflict zone in Nagorny Karabakh,” noting that “both sides expressed their great concern about the widespread and continuous hostilities as well as the participation of affiliated militants. Lavrov and Zarif called for "reducing tension and preventing provocative and military speeches," noting "the important role that can be played by the countries of the region, especially Azerbaijan and Armenia's neighbors, in creating the appropriate conditions for the two parties to return to the negotiating table as soon as possible."
Lavrov and Zarif also discussed vital issues for the bilateral agendas of Russia and Iran and agreed to continue the subsequent contacts.
