Comment: Climate protection is important, a separate committee is not

There will be no climate protection in the new district council of Erding. That's a good thing, says editor-in-chief Hans Moritz. The subject is too important to be looked at in isolation.

There will be no climate protection in the new district council of Erding.

That's a good thing, says editor-in-chief Hans Moritz.

The subject is too important to be looked at in isolation.

Climate protection is also an important issue at the local level.

To dedicate his own committee to him in the district council is not only - superfluous - symbolism, but also rather detrimental to the cause.

It is therefore a good thing that the district committee rejected the Greens' motion.

Their arguments are good and important - but not for a separate committee.

Climate protection is a cross-cutting task, a challenge that affects all areas of politics: the construction of new schools and roads, energy supply, local public transport, tourism and business (funding).

There can only be one answer to this: The fight against global warming must be waged in all departments.

It doesn't help to create a department that only deals with climate protection.

There would be constant conflicts of competence and double consultations.

Because the committees do not meet that often, this would delay projects (even further).

If the district decides to build a new school, for example, the building committee will no longer only have to discuss room planning, floor coverings and furnishings, but also their climate compatibility.

This can sometimes lead to a project being canceled.

The climate advisory board is fine, because advisory expertise can gather here.

Ideally, it is the district council's "think tank".

However, it must also be clear to the advisory board: it is only the tipster from outside; the citizenship has only authorized politicians to make a decision.

As important as this topic is, the district councils must always keep the big picture in mind.
