A cleaning crew from Mexico City's sewer system, Mexico's largest city, was surprised to discover about two weeks ago a giant car-sized rat - until it turned out that it was not real at all.

On September 18, the team began renovating and cleaning the city’s sewers in anticipation of the approaching winter rains.

But in one of the turns in the canals, the crew found a huge rat in front of them.

At first they were startled by the sight in front of them, but it soon became clear that this was a giant doll made a few years ago by hand for Halloween, and not a real animal.

While the crew dumped the 22 tons of rubbish taken out of the sewer into the municipal landfill, one of its members washed the giant doll down the street, when it was quickly caught by passers-by filming the unusual event, posted it on social media and made it go viral.

"I would be pretty scared if I came across this doll in the sewer myself, it looks really alive," wrote one respondent to the doll's rinsing video.

The publication led a woman named Evelyn Lopez to ask the authorities to return the doll to her, claiming that she was the one who made the doll, which she said disappeared during a rainstorm that separated the area a few years ago, and that somehow found herself in the city sewer.
