Bad weather: "If we applied the law, thousands of homes would have to be demolished"

INTERVIEW - For Yvette Veyret, geographer and author of the Atlas of Risks in France, the repetition of these violent episodes of rain sounds like a call to order: the danger of flooding still exists.

Our alert system was built little by little.

For several years, Météo France has been responsible for producing flood risk maps.

This information is then transmitted to the prefects, who bring them down to the mayors, who alert the population.

Cities now have a municipal information document on major risks (Dicrim) which lists the existing dangers and the means to protect themselves from them.

In 1994, warning systems already existed but they have become more effective.

In addition, our waterways are now very well monitored.

Everything seems to have worked well during these last bad weather.

Without that, we would have had more killed.
