FARC assumes responsibility for the murder of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado

 The Special Jurisdiction for Peace in Colombia (JEP) reported this Saturday through a statement that the former guerrilla Secretariat of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) assumed responsibility for the murder of six people, including that of politician and journalist Álvaro Gómez Hurtado, which occurred on November 2, 1995.

The statement indicates that three members of the former FARC-EP Secretariat signed the letter assuming responsibility: Julián Gallo Cubillos, Pastor Lisandro Alape Lascarro, and Pablo Catatumbo Torres Victoria, who also offered to contribute truth to clarify the events that occurred in these murders.

The murder of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado occurred within the framework of the scandal over the leakage of money from the Cali cartel to Ernesto Samper's presidential campaign in 1994, and weeks after Gómez Hurtado criticized Samper through his editorials in the newspaper El Nuevo Siglo, where he proposed that he resign the Presidency of Colombia.

Álvaro Gómez Hurtado is known for having been former president of the 1991 Colombian Constituent Assembly and leader of the Conservative Party, as well as the son of former Colombian president Laureano Gómez.
