Saudi Arabia eased today (Sunday) restrictions on pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest city for Islam, which had been in place for months following the corona plague.

In a rare move, the kingdom vigorously banned the Omra, a pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca throughout the year, which usually attracts millions each year.

Starting today, Riyadh will allow 6,000 pilgrims a day to enter the compound of the Great Mosque in Mecca.

In the first stage, only citizens and residents will be allowed to enter the mosque, and each will be given three hours to complete the religious mitzvah.

The Great Mosque, which is disinfected and cleaned several times a day, is the seat of the Kaaba, to which Muslims pray five times a day.

Visitors must register and book an appointment in advance through an app, and keep their distance.

They can also choose their means of transportation and meeting points.

On official television today, less than 50 people with traditional white robes were seen surrounding the stone and walking a few meters apart.

On weekdays, the mosque is crowded with worshipers from around the world, crowded throughout the day and night.

In the next phase, which will begin on October 18, the maximum number of pilgrims will be 15,000 and 40,000 worshipers.

Muslims from around the world will be able to complete the Omra starting November 1, after Saudi Arabia recently began easing restrictions on international flights for the first time since March.

In July, the traditional Hajj took place in a very limited way, due to the fear that it would become a global center of contagion.

Only the locals were allowed to complete the pilgrimage, and only about a thousand of them were honored.

In normal years, more than two million pilgrims come to Mecca from all over the Muslim world.

Although it has taken early and extensive steps to curb the virus, Saudi Arabia has registered about 336,000 diagnoses, including about 4,850 dead.
