Separatism or secularism: Gérald Darmanin launches the debate

2020-10-06T18:39:29.552Z

Discussions on the title of the law are continuing. The term “separatism” could be abandoned in favor of the notion of secularism or the Republic.

The day of the Minister of the Interior started badly.

At the microphone of Radio Classique, Gérald Darmanin suggested that the term “separatism” used by Emmanuel Macron for his plan against radical Islam would be removed from the title of the bill, presented on December 9.

"It will undoubtedly not be his name, since the President of the Republic mentioned in his speech something that would resemble a bill reinforcing secularism and republican principles

, explained the number one of Beauvau.

But the idea is well to fight against the main separatism which is radical Islam, but this is not the only object of the text. "

Faced with the media rush, the ministry had to rectify the situation, recalling that the exact title of the text of the law was not arbitrated.

“We have time to choose him.

The important thing is that the threat is clearly designated, ”

insists those around Darmanin.

Behind the scenes, the title of the bill gave rise to bitter negotiations.

Should we clearly designate radical Islam?

Jean Castex and Jean-Michel Blanquer are in favor.

As for the concept of "separatism" emerging from complex Macronian thought, many ministers agree that it is difficult to understand.

This semantic shift, however, allows the president to avoid speaking of “communitarianism”, a term that has too many connotations.

“At the beginning, the president wanted to bet on complexity, hence the term separatism.

It was also a way of distinguishing itself from Marine Le Pen, which lapses into simplicity, ”

explains a historical macronist.

“It is a misunderstood term,

agrees a leading minister.

What I hear is: "The president wants a law against separatism, but what is this thing?" "

The idea is therefore to move from communitarianism to separatism and finally to secularism, to approach the discourse in a more positive way, so that the object creates something common, a gathering.

A member of the majority

Sometimes used in the plural, sometimes in the singular, the term could therefore gradually disappear.

"We would like to ensure that it is a law for, and not against something,"

insists a minister involved in this file, who recalls that the President of the Republic intends, thanks to this plan, to unite the country.

"The idea is therefore to move from communitarianism to separatism and finally to secularism, to approach the discourse in a more positive way, so that the object creates the common, the gathering",

approves a member of the majority.

The concepts of

“the Republic in action”

and of the

“republican awakening”

, used by the Head of State to present his project, are also part of the discussions.

In the end, Emmanuel Macron will have the last word.

"The title is not really the subject,"

said those around Gerald Darmanin.

Who remembers that the

law on the ban on the burqa

actually referred in its exact name to the prohibition of concealment of the face in public space?

The key is that the title is inclusive. "

While waiting to know the final arbitration and the content, Gérald Darmanin and Marlène Schiappa have started to consult the party officials.

After the boss of La République en Marche, Monday, the boss of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, was received on Tuesday.

Adrien Quatennens and Alexis Corbière were expected in their turn at the end of the afternoon, in the name of La France insoumise.

During questions to the government, Gérald Darmanin accused Jean-Luc Mélenchon's party of being linked to an

"Islamo-leftism"

who

"destroys the Republic"

.
