The World Meteorological Organization reported that the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica grew rapidly to more than 23 million square kilometers when it peaked in early October.
The ozone layer protects the Earth from ultraviolet radiation and its deterioration is related to temperatures in the atmosphere.
