US presidential election: Donald Trump's physical and mental health at the heart of the campaign

Without providing proof, the American president considers himself cured of Covid-19 and wishes to hold meetings again. Democrats, them,

How is Donald Trump?

Very good, if the main person is to be believed.

"I am back because I am a perfect physical specimen and I am extremely young," the 74-year-old president boasted Thursday.

The next day, he said he was cured on a conservative radio show: "My voice is now perfect."

Tested positive for Covid-19 at the beginning of October, the American president says he is now ready to go back to campaign this Saturday, in Florida, with the blank check of his personal doctor.

Will he go?

The ex-reality TV star was already scheduled to give an interview face-to-face this Friday evening on Fox News… with a medical evaluation scheduled during the program by the channel's doctor-consultant!

Welcome to the 2020 American Campaign ...

The determination of the outgoing president is however far from reassuring.

Already on Fox News, Donald Trump refused Thursday evening to say whether he remained positive for the virus.

His telephone interview on the conservative channel was strewn with small fits of coughing which obviously made the rounds of social networks.

White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany spoke on Friday of mysterious "medical tests" being carried out.

They would make it possible to "ensure that when the president is again on the ground, he cannot transmit the virus".

She herself has been infected and works from home.

The White House has indeed become a real “cluster”.

Even the head of the Republicans in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, admitted that he had not set foot there since the beginning of August because of the lack of precautionary measures.

According to the ABC channel, at least 34 people have tested positive there, in addition to the president.

He's not going up the hill in the polls

Doubts about Donald Trump's physical condition add to his inconsistent comments.

On Tuesday, he tweeted negotiations on an economic aid plan for Americans hit by the crisis, before appearing to resent it again.

Of course, America is used to its about-faces, but there are also its many disjointed remarks of the week that make people talk.

Just like his tone even more aggressive than usual.

Still on Fox News, he called Joe Biden's running mate, Senator Kamala Harris, a "monster".

“Biden is not mentally capable of being president,” he ruled.

What if it was the other way around?

What if the mental health of Donald Trump, taking steroids as part of his treatment against the virus, was the blow?

In a very political maneuver, the patron saint of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, thus presented, this Friday, a law aimed at creating a commission judging the capacity of the head of state to do his job.

This text would be based on the 25th amendment of the Constitution, which allows to dismiss a president in the event of physical or mental incapacity.

With less than a month before the election, such a scenario is unlikely to happen.

The commission is also intended to be permanent.

It would therefore also apply to future administrations.

But the fact that the 25th Amendment is once again floating in the air in Washington is another blow to the image of Donald Trump.

The latter has still not recovered in the polls.

Friday, Joe Biden was given the winner with 9.7 points ahead on average at the national level, according to the site RealClearPolitics, and 4.5 points ahead in the main key states.
