Iran today (Sunday) recorded a record number of daily deaths from the corona virus - 251, at the same time as two senior officials contracted the virus and the currency's value plummeted to an all-time low.
Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Larry said the death toll since the outbreak reached 28,544, the highest in the Middle East.
The previous daily death record was set just four days ago, with 239 victims.
A further 3,822 new cases were diagnosed in the last day, and a total of 500,075 cases across the Islamic Republic.
Close to 4,500 patients in critical condition.
Among the newcomers is Iran's head of the Atomic Energy Agency, Ali Akbar Salahi, who also serves as vice president.
The news agency Tesnim reported that he was diagnosed last week and has since been in isolation, and is in good health.
Another vice president, Muhammad Bagger Nobhat who is in charge of budget and planning, was also diagnosed positive for the virus.

Sources in the country, which is home to 80 million people, have described the situation in recent days as a "third wave", but the government opposes the imposition of extensive closures due to the acute economic crisis.
Instead, the Ministry of Health plans to extend the obligation to wear masks from Tehran to other major cities, following a warning by President Hassan Rouhani that anyone who improves it will be fined.
"We have asked the police and the Basij and other agencies to help us fight the violations more severely," Health Minister Said Namaki said.
He said restrictions would be extended from the capital Tehran to other major cities in the coming weeks.
Since June, it has been mandatory to wear masks indoors.
On Friday, the governor of Tehran announced a week-long extension of the closure of schools, mosques, shops, restaurants and other public institutions.

U.S. sanctions have hurt Iran's ability to sell oil, and on Thursday additional sanctions were imposed, this time on 18 Iranian banks.
They have in fact been cut off from the international financial system.
The Iranian regime has been criticized for rendering the epidemic’s true numbers and in a late response to it, in part due to the attempt to get voters to the polls in the last parliamentary elections.
These received the lowest turnout since the 1979 revolution.
In addition, in recent months there have been various explosions and accidents across the country, some near sensitive sites and most linked to Iran’s heavy heat and outdated infrastructure.
Five people were killed and nine injured in a gas cylinder explosion in the city of Ahwaz, the capital of their oil-rich district of Hozsan, today.
