Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte today (Tuesday) imposed new restrictions on gatherings, restaurants, sports activities and schools in an attempt to slow the recent spike in the number of people infected with the coronavirus.

The government order, issued after several days of drafting and speculating on the next steps, will take effect within 24 hours and be valid for 30 days.

It prohibits parties in restaurants, clubs or the open air and recommends not holding house parties or hosting more than six guests at a time.

Weddings and other ceremonies were limited to 30 people.

The order strongly recommends wearing masks, which are mandatory in public buildings and open spaces, even at home, while people outside the family are staying there.

Restaurants and bars will be able to stay open until midnight, but they will only serve customers sitting at tables.

Starting at 9 p.m., serving services to customers will be stopped while standing, outdoors or indoors, in an effort to stop the large evening gatherings outside the bars, which have been linked to a surge in the number of people infected with the virus.

The number of daily diagnoses doubled, reaching 5,000 on Friday, for the first time since March, and almost 6,000 on Saturday.

The numbers have dropped slightly in the last two days, but they usually rise in the second half of the week.

The death toll is still much lower than a peak of about 900 a day in March, but they have increased in recent days, and 39 deaths were reported yesterday.

Under the order, amateur sporting activities that are not organized under an official framework committed to Corona's safety protocol will be banned.

In practice, this means that most amateur teams will be able to continue playing.

Schools will remain open, but activities outside of classes will be curtailed, and trips and student exchanges will be banned.
