Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Eshtiya said it would be a "disaster" for the Palestinians, and also for the world, if Donald Trump is re-elected President of the United States next month.

In a conversation with European MPs, which took place yesterday and was posted today (Tuesday) on his Facebook page, the senior Palestinian official said that in the last four years, the Trump administration has hit the Palestinians hard.

"If we are going to live another four years with President Trump, then God help us and the whole world," he said.

Traditionally, the Palestinians have refrained from taking an explicit public stance in relation to the US election, but Ishtia's remarks reflect a sense of despair in Ramallah, after a series of American moves that have left them weakened and isolated.

Eshetia expressed hope that the victory of Democratic candidate Joe Biden, who leads the polls, would improve the chances of a peace agreement.

"If things are going to change in the United States, I think it will have a direct impact on Palestinian-Israeli relations," he said.

"And it will also affect Palestinian-American relations."

The Palestinians severed ties with the United States after the Trump administration recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in late 2017, and later moved the U.S. embassy to the city.

In addition, Trump has cut hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to the Palestinians, closed the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Washington and the "deal of the century" he published earlier this year was perceived as pro-Israel.

In Ramallah she was rejected outright.

The Trump administration even persuaded the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel, and promised that more Arab countries would follow in their footsteps.

These agreements broke the traditional consensus of the Arab world, which conditioned normalization with Israel in resolving the conflict with the Palestinians.

It was one of the few pressure levers on the Palestinians.
