Scottish Championship: heading for St Andrews…

2020-10-13T10:31:27.625Z

PRESENTATION - The Fairmont, next to the legendary Old Course, welcomes this new stage of the European Tour. Six residents of the world top 100 as well as nine French people are involved.

Happy Scotland, land of golf par excellence, which is hosting a second European Tour tournament in three weeks.

After the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, won by the Englishman Aaron Rai at the first hole of playoffface to his compatriot, Tommy Fleetwood, place at the Scottish Championship, organized in St Andrews, in the Holy of Holies, not on the legendary Old Course, regular host of The Open, but rather at the Fairmont St Andrews.

This new stage of an endowment of one million euros comes here very modestly to fill the gaping hole left in the 2020 calendar by the pandemic linked to Covid-19.

Above all, she completed a second UK Swing started on September 24 in Northern Ireland (with the Irish Open) followed by two Rolex Series, the Scottish Open, and the BMW PGA Championship last week in Wentworth (England).

With breathtaking views over St Andrews Bay and the no less legendary Old Course, the Torrance Course, a par 72 of 6,610 meters, regularly hosts local qualifying for the British Open.

He has also received the Scottish Youth National Championship and the Scottish Senior Open.

The field of this first edition is however far from rivaling that of Wentworth last week in Surrey.

Only one representative of the world's top 50 is indeed at the start.

This is Lee Westwood, currently fourth in the Race to Dubai.

Five other top 100 residents are also present, such as the English Matt Wallace (51st), Sam Horsfield (85th), Aaron Rai (93rd) and Eddie Pepperell (94th) as well as the Scot Robert MacIntyre (95th).

They will obviously be among the favorites for the final victory.

To this short-list, we can add another Scottish, Marc Warren, winner in Austria on July 12 for the first post-Covid event co-sanctioned with the Challenge Tour and recently fourth in the Scottish Open, but also the South African Justin Harding and Australians Wade Ormsby and Scott Hend.

Stalter, in the fourth week

French side, they are only two to have made the trip between Wentworth and St Andrews.

Namely Alexander Levy and Joël Stalter, who both crossed the cut on Friday evening.

The Lorrainer continues here with a fourth consecutive week (cut missed in the Scottish, 68th in Ireland, 62nd in the BMW PGA Chp).

Absent from the Portugal Masters (September 10-13), Adrien Saddier and Grégory Havret return to competition while Clément Sordet, Romain Wattel, Damien Perrier and Mathieu Fenasse return after a two-week break.

Finally, for veteran Raphaël Jacquelin, the objective this time will be to cross the cut, which was not the case at the Scottish Open.

It remains to be seen how the field will negotiate the weather conditions which are expected to be difficult throughout the week.

If we don't expect rain, it will be very cold in the north of Scotland (between 10 and 11 degrees celsius) and the wind should be blowing (between 16 and 25 km / h), especially on weekends!
