How independently could Amy Coney Barrett judge as a Supreme Court judge?

How independent of your own political convictions and independent of the ideas of US President Trump, who nominated you to the Supreme Court.

This question dominated day two of the hearing before the US Senate Judiciary Committee.

One topic: Barack Obama's health care reform, which Trump and large parts of the Republicans reject - and which will be negotiated in the Supreme Court in November.

Kamala Harris, vice president-designate when Joe Biden won the election, cross-examined Barrett.

Kama Harris

"Before you were nominated, did you know Trump's statement that he would nominate someone to overturn the Affordable Care Act? Please answer yes or no."

Amy Coney Barrett, Judge

"I am very cautious as I am speaking under oath. I don't remember seeing these statements at this point. I don't remember them. But I don't know the context. I can't give you any give a clear answer. I want to say that I don't remember. "

Previously, the prominent colleague Amy Klobuchar Barrett had asked about Obamacare.

Amy Klobuchar, Senator

"Ms. Judge, my first question is, should we take the President at his word when he says his nominee will do the right thing and overturn the Affordable Care Act?"

Amy Coney Barrett, Judge

"I can't comment on what the President said on Twitter. He didn't say anything to me about it."

Amy Klobuchar, Senator

"Then

all

I can do is look at your work so far and what it means for the American people. I think it will have a big impact."

Amy Coney Barrett, Judge

"I'm not here to destroy the Affordable Care Act."

Barrett also remained vague in answering the question of whether she would participate in a possible negotiation over the outcome of the presidential election.

Amy Coney Barrett

"I would consider it. I hope the members of the committee will trust my integrity and not think I will be used to make the election."

Coney Barrett is considered conservative and is known for her clear stance on issues like abortion rights.

If the Justice Committee confirms her as a Supreme Court judge, the US Supreme Court moves further to the right.

The 22 members of the Barrett committee interviewed for more than nine hours on Tuesday.

The Democrats see the 48-year-old's nomination in jeopardizing the rights of women, gays, reading, bisexual and transgender people.

Barrett, however, downplayed the importance of personal political beliefs.

"Judges can't just wake up one morning and say, I have an agenda, I like guns, I hate guns, I like abortion, I hate abortion and then act like a queen and impose its will on the world. You have to Cases and controversies wait and then adhere to the rule of law. "

Republicans want the Judiciary Committee to appoint Amy Coney Barett to the Supreme Court this week.

She would then take the place of the left-wing liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who was considered a champion for women's rights and who died in mid-September.
