Frankfurt - A
Lufthansa Cargo
plane
narrowly escaped a disaster.
This is reported by the specialist portal “Aviation Herald”.
The reason was apparently wrong values of the altimeter.
The flight of the Boeing 777-200F machine with the registration D-ALFG was scheduled to take off on Saturday, October 10 at around 9:20 a.m. from
Frankfurt Airport
to Shanghai-Pudong.
Shortly after take-off, the pilots radioed the emergency call “
Mayday Mayday
” to
Frankfurt
,
according to the “Avaiation Herald”
, as their altimeter was showing unreliable values.
Return to Frankfurt Airport after just an hour
A request from the pilots at the tower at
Frankfurt Airport
revealed that, according to the data it sent, their aircraft was only around 61 meters high.
The instruments on board the Boeing, however, indicated an altitude of around 1900 meters.
Information that also coincided with the visual altitude of the pilots.
However, since the transmission of the actual flight altitude is of essential importance for the safety of air traffic, the pilots decided to return to Frankfurt Airport.

The machine flew off from Frankfurt Airport the following day
Before landing, the crew of the
Lufthansa Cargo plane
let out
some fuel so that they didn't have to land with overweight.
Around 65 minutes after take-off, the one and a half year old Boeing touched down again on runway 07C
at Frankfurt Airport
, as data from the Flightaware portal show.
The incident involving the 777-200F did not pose a threat to people in the air because it was a cargo aircraft.
According to Lufthansa Cargo, the machine flew again on the following day (October 13, 2020).
It went from
Frankfurt
to Tokyo.
