In the fight against the extremely increased number of corona infections in the Upper Bavarian district of Berchtesgadener Land, Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) practically wants to impose a lockdown.

There will be a package of measures "that corresponds to a lockdown," said Söder after a video conference of the party executive in Nuremberg.

Bavaria's Health Minister Melanie Huml (CSU) should work out the details together with the district and the government of Upper Bavaria.

New infections rise to 252 per 100,000

In the Berchtesgadener Land district, the number of newly infected people per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days on Monday was around 252, according to the Robert Koch Institute. The district is one of the regions with the highest seven-day incidences nationwide.

The numbers should be pressed, said Söder, so that there is no danger to others.

To do this, public life there must now be shut down.

"There is no other way."

The contacts could no longer be traced, so they would have to be significantly restricted.

Overall, Söder sees an extremely difficult situation ahead of Germany.

If the infection numbers across the country are not reduced, contacts could no longer be traced.

This in turn resulted in contact restrictions in the end.

"This is the preliminary stage of a lockdown," he warned.

Nobody wants that.

"But we are approaching this situation again with great strides all over Germany."

Overall, the situation is more serious than in spring, among other things because winter is just around the corner and it is more difficult to go outside.

"The overall success of the corona pandemic wave is not defined by ordinances or fines, but crucially by the willingness of the population to participate," said Söder.

"We don't want a second lockdown - but a second lockdown is possible.
