Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron discussed today the developments of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno Karabakh region, stressing the necessity of adhering to the agreements signed on a ceasefire in the region.
Russia Today quoted the Kremlin as saying in a statement that "Putin and Macron, on the initiative of the French side, conducted a phone call in which they discussed in detail developments in the conflict zone around Nagorny Karabakh."
The statement indicated that Putin informed Macron of the steps being taken to prevent a subsequent escalation of hostilities ... and to resume negotiations as soon as possible with the aim of achieving a political and diplomatic settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh issue.
The two sides noted the importance of the two parties ’commitment to the ceasefire agreements reached on the 10 and 17 of this month and expressed their readiness to continue close coordination between them as Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group alongside the United States as well as through the United Nations Security Council channels. They agreed to continue bilateral contacts between the two parties.
On September 27, armed clashes erupted on the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces in Nagorno Karabakh and adjacent areas, in the most dangerous escalation between the two sides in nearly three decades, amid mutual accusations of starting the fighting.
