The mayor of Rome has ordered an investigation after a family of wild boars was shot dead by police in a playground.

The mother and her six cubs roamed last week in a playground near the Vatican, and masses of children came to the scene to feed them.

However, when police arrived on Friday, they shot them with half anesthesia and then injected them with deadly poison.

Their killing has sparked outrage among residents and animal rights organizations.

"A hasty decision was made to kill them after finding shelter in the Orlio Playground, instead of saving their lives given the alternative solutions proposed," the International Animal Welfare Organization said in a statement.

"I proposed capturing, transferring and housing the wild boars," Michele Brambilla, a member of parliament who heads an animal rights organization, told Corriere della Sera.

"I made a bloody offer."

A city council member said the decision to kill the wild boars was made because there were no cages available for their capture.

"The preferred choice is to capture them in special cages," councilwoman Laura Fiorini wrote on Facebook.

However, she said the regional authorities did not prepare them.

The investigation by the authorities in the Italian capital is expected to examine why the decision was made to kill the pig family and whether the police acted before the procedures.

It is estimated that the pigs arrived at the "Modern Mario" park in the west of the city due to the crowded garbage cans that attracted them.

Police closed the area Thursday, but children continued to feed the animals through holes in the fence.

Animal rights organizations say they have offered to help move the pigs, but their proposals have been ignored.

On Friday there were clashes between residents and police near the park.

Several policemen arrived with rifles and the protesters slammed them with "killers" as veterinarians stood nearby and gave the pigs the lethal shots before taking them out of the park.

Residents arrived in the area over the weekend, leaving flowers and posters.

Wild boars are common in Rome and large parts of Italy, but they are controversial.

They are linked to thousands of road accidents a year and the deaths and injuries of civilians in various attacks.
