Donald Trump has done it again.

Once again, the US President is disparaging about top immunologist Anthony Fauci.

In a phone call with his election campaign team, he said on Monday that Fauci had made mistakes in the fight against the corona pandemic.

Donald Trump / US President

"People are sick of hearing Fauci and those idiots, all these people who made mistakes. Fauci is a nice guy. He's been around for 500 years. He said everyone else was wrong

."

During an election campaign in Arizona on Monday, the US President publicly mobbed in front of his supporters against Anthony Fauci.

Among other things, Trump makes fun of the unsuccessful first pitch throw of his chief immunologist, with which he opened the US baseball season.

"

And Doctor Fauci said don't put on masks. Now he says, put on masks. He's a great guy, I like him. He just has such a bad arm. He has a bad arm, but he's a good guy .

In surveys, a majority of Americans have been giving Trump bad marks for his crisis management in the pandemic for months.

Fauci enjoys significantly more trust than Trump.

As chief immunologist, he has been advising US presidents for decades and is a much sought-after expert.

A fact that Trump is addressed by a reporter between his campaign appearances.

"

Mr President, why are you criticizing Doctor Fauci? Has it anything to do with the fact that he is so popular with the public?"

Donald Trump / US President

"

I think Doctor Fauci is a really nice man, but we also let him do what he wants. He's on TV a lot, he loves being on TV. We let him do that. Sometimes he says things that aren't quite right - alas. But he's a nice guy. I like him, but he gave some bad instructions.

Trump's Democratic challenger Joe Biden's campaign team criticized the president's refusal to listen to scientists made the United States the hardest hit country in the world by the pandemic.

In the polls, challenger Biden is ahead of incumbent Trump.

Nevertheless, Trump is confident of victory:

"

I'll tell you: we will win. I wouldn't have said that two weeks ago. Three weeks ago, I don't know, I wouldn't have said that.

In view of the current polls, this hardly appears to be pure optimism.

And the attacks against Fauci are a desperate attempt to divert attention from their own failures during the corona pandemic.
