German police have arrested a 20-year-old Syrian citizen on suspicion of murdering a man in the city of Dresden earlier this month.

Police in the eastern city said today (Wednesday) that he was arrested last night after investigators linked him to the attack, in which another person was seriously injured by stab wounds.

The two were 53 and 55 years old from the west of the country, who were on vacation in the city.

Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht said the "investigation revealed that the horrific killing" was an Islamist terrorist attack.

"Islamic terrorism is a great and ongoing danger to our society, which we must fight resolutely."

She added that the federal prosecution, which deals with serious offenses including acts of terrorism, is conducting the investigation.

Der Spiegel magazine reported that the suspect had been known to authorities as an extremist Islamist activist for years.

He was jailed for more than two years for inciting crimes against the state and recruiting ISIS members in the past.

He arrived in Germany in 2015, at the height of the immigration crisis, and his application for asylum was denied.

The announcement of his arrest comes as France has begun a comprehensive operation against extremists in its territory, after a Chechen terrorist beheaded a teacher in a Paris suburb after presenting illustrations of the Prophet Muhammad during a lesson.
