What looks like a child's drawing is estimated by researchers to be 2,000 years old.

At first glance, the

drawing of a cat

that was discovered on a desert hill in Peru looks like a joke by tourists *.

In fact, the child-like picture is much older - probably 2,000 years old.

The

giant cat picture, which researchers recently discovered by chance while working on a desert hill, extends

over a total of

37 meters

.

According to information from the British newspaper The Guardian, the scratching pattern could be between 200 and 100 BC.

In the hill.

“The figure was barely recognizable and was about to disappear into the ground.

Since the drawing is on a rather steep slope, it is

exposed

to the

effects of natural erosion,

”reports the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.

In the past few weeks, the picture, a so-called geoglyph, has been cleaned and preserved.

The lines would have a width between 30 and 40 centimeters.

Where did the giant cat scratching image come from in Peru?

The geoglyph that has now been discovered is one of many that has been carved into the Peruvian desert floor.

Over the centuries, different peoples have

drawn

different animal pictures

in the sand - a hummingbird, an orca or a monkey, for example.

They are called Nazca Lines because they are assigned to the cultures of the

Paracas and Nazca

, as the magazine GEO writes.

Humans created them by scraping the rock from the desert floor to bring out the underlying layers of sediment.

Presumably they originated in a period of 500 BC.

BC and AD 500. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

They can be found about 400 kilometers south of Lima.

Some geoglyphs are so large that they can hardly be seen at close range - only when you look at the drawings from above can you see most of the patterns.

According to GEO, researchers today suspect that people wanted to appease the gods with these ritual drawings and asked for rain.

Precipitation rarely occurred in this region.
