There is never a warning.
As soon as they arrived in Tessalit, the men of the 1st Parachute Hussar Regiment (RHP) understood it.
That same evening, the detachment was targeted by 18 rockets firing at the camp.
Fortunately, there was not too much damage.
"In the Sahel, there is no warm-up lap",
warns Lieutenant-Colonel Gaspard (1), chief of operations of the desert tactical group (GTD) no 2, "Bercheny".
At the beginning of the summer, when Europe was deconfined, the 1st RHP landed in Mali for a four-month mandate, one more for the French army.
Since 2013, it has been involved in the Sahel in the fight against the terrorist groups which undermine this region as large as Europe.
Founded three hundred years ago by the Hungarian Count Ladislas de Bercheny, the 1st RHP is a cavalry regiment, "hunters" who lead the fight "on board" in their armored vehicles.
Almost all of them were sent to the field, i.e. several hundred of the 5,100 soldiers.
