TRIBUNE - The review Cités, founded and managed by the philosopher *, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in a difficult context for intellectual life in France, he explains.

In this year 2020, two generalist magazines are celebrating their anniversary.

The 40th for the review

Le Débat

(Gallimard), by Pierre Nora and Marcel Gauchet, the 20th for the review

Cités

(PUF).

However, these two birthdays are marked by very different choices.

On the one hand, it was decided to close the review, on the other, on the contrary, to continue it in order to meet the immense challenges facing us.

Thus, the volume published on the occasion of the anniversary of

Cités

, “France in stories” (PUF), tries to take again fresh the question of the identity of France through the multiplicity of the stories of which it is the object at all levels from its lands, to its institutional and political dimensions, including intellectual life, language, the war of memories.

End of the review Debate: "Invective, conformism and copy-paste have replaced dialogue!"

However, by a strange coincidence, this approach responds to that undertaken in the classic volumes of Pierre Nora on the "places of memories", about forty years ago, not by a rehabilitation of the story.
