At 3:45 p.m. (2:15 p.m. in France), an aromatic unit at the Bandar Imam petrochemical plant (in southwestern Iran) caught fire after an explosion,
" said Mehrdad Gheibi, an official of the company, to the press agency.
The technical term “
aromatic
” relates to a particular group of hydrocarbons, such as benzene.
Firefighters from the company and local services took three hours to put out the blaze, managing to contain it before it spread to other units, Irna continued, referring to a statement from the company.
Gheibi said an investigation was underway to determine the causes of the explosion.
The affected plant is one of the largest in Iran, located in the petrochemical complex at Imam Khomeini's port in Khuzestan province, near the Gulf.
It is the latest incident in a series of fires and explosions that have affected military and civilian sites in Iran since June.
An explosion damaged the Natanz nuclear complex in central Iran in early July.
The authorities had initially spoken of an accident before affirming several weeks later that it was a "
sabotage
".
