The corona pandemic is causing the next cut in Munich.
The Winter Tollwood will not take place in 2020.
The Munich * event calendar is poorer by one cult event.
On Friday (October 23rd) the winter tollwood was officially canceled.
The plan to have a scaled-down festival was rejected.
Update from October 23, 2020, 6:23 p.m.:
The organizers of the Winter Tollwood fought for their festival until the very end.
But now it is certain: there will be no Tollwood in 2020!
According to the organizers, the health risk for visitors is too great.
"In the past few months we have
done everything
we
can to ensure
that the Winter Tollwood can take place," says festival director Rita Rottenwallner.
The adapted concept was already very reduced - without tents and with only a third of the previous market and restaurant stands.
But in view of the extreme increase in the corona numbers, you now have to
cancel
decided.
"In addition, we would have to start building now, but we don't know whether we can actually open and stay open then," explains Rottenwallner.
Christiane Stenzel from Tollwood GmbH adds: "We are assuming that Tollwood will take place in summer 2021 - if not, that would be dramatic!" The GmbH must already put its employees on short-time work.
There is one tiny consolation: there
should be an art installation on Theresienwiese.
“A twelve-meter-high phoenix sculpture will be part of the installation and symbolize strength and renewal,” says Rottenwallner.
Not only the Tollwood, but also the
Christmas markets are
gradually disappearing from the event calendar in view of the corona situation.
The markets in Pasing, at the airport and at the Chinese Tower have so far been canceled.
Furthermore, the Alpenwahn Christmas market at
Viktualienmarkt
and the
Feldmochinger Christmas
market are canceled
.
There are only about half as many stands on Rotkreuzplatz this year, because there is no artisan market either.
Other (Christkindl) markets are to take place - as of now - such as the market for the senses on the Praterinsel.
Economic advisor Clemens Baumgärtner on the Tollwood rejection: "I find it very regrettable, the winter Tollwood is simply part of the Christmas events in Munich." The municipal Christmas market on Marienplatz should take place.
