Lewi Hamilton took pole position on the wire on Saturday in front of his teammate Valtteri Bottas.
This is the 97th pole in the career of the Briton, record holder in the exercise.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull) set the third fastest time ahead of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).
Next come Sergio Perez (Racing Point) and the McLarens of Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris.
Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) is 9th, one place ahead of Daniel Ricciardo (Renault).
Note that if he wins in the Algarve on Sunday, Hamilton will beat the record for F1 victories that he shares with Michael Schumacher (91 successes).
