The Russian Foreign Ministry described the ceasefire agreement between the Libyan parties, which was signed yesterday in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations, as an "important step".
"We consider this event an important step towards overcoming the protracted acute crisis in Libya, and we count on establishing a comprehensive and sustainable political dialogue aimed ultimately at restoring the unity of the country and creating bodies capable of resuming the situation," Maria Zakharova, the official spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in a statement to reporters today. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced yesterday the signing of a permanent ceasefire agreement between the delegations of the Libyan National Army and the Government of National Accord participating in the talks of the Joint Military Committee "five plus five".
Since the NATO aggression against it in 2011, Libya has been witnessing a state of chaos and insecurity in light of the proliferation of weapons and terrorist organizations, while two main parties are currently fighting over the authorities, namely the Government of National Accord and the parallel government operating in eastern Libya supported by the Parliament and the Libyan army led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
