The Schongau learning aid is always looking for fellow campaigners.

But the Corona crisis has made the situation even worse.

Some children need support more than ever.

Schongau

- “Only five.” After a moment's hesitation, Ina Frömmrich gives the number of volunteers who are currently involved in Schongau learning aid.

Much more people would be needed to help Schongau primary school students with problems, emphasizes the head of the local learning aid.

With the corona situation, the situation got worse.

A few older volunteers stopped, among other things because they wanted to reduce the risk of infection.

Understandable, so Frommrich.

What is even more serious, however, is that children who had learning problems before the crisis fell further behind due to the school closings.

This is also confirmed by the headmistress Ute Meub.

For various reasons, parents were unable to offer their children the support they needed, and perhaps had to contend with their own worries.

“Valuable support,” says the headmistress

It would be all the more important that the children now get help to keep up with classmates again.

The learning aid is dedicated to this work.

In the afternoons the volunteers come to school to “help children with starting difficulties in life”, as the headmistress puts it, with homework and to do learning exercises.

"It is a very valuable support for the students," emphasizes Meub.

Second to fourth grade students who have particular difficulties are suggested by their class teacher.

But not all can be looked after.

For the learning aid, youth social workers select those children who are seen to have a good chance of success because they absolutely want to participate in the program themselves and whose parents accept the offer.

Three times a week for one hour each in the afternoon, the children are supervised while they study, according to the wish.

"At the moment, unfortunately, we only manage it twice a week." But that could change if more volunteers can be found.

Nice to see the kids improve

So far, no one who has been involved in learning support has regretted it, says Frömmrich, who has been with us for 18 years and does not want to be without the task.

“You grow fond of children.

And you take a lot with you for life, ”she explains.

For her, one of the most beautiful moments is when, after studying together, children run up to her cheering one day because they have improved by one grade.

“The children often write fives and sixs before they come to the learning aid,” says Frommrich.

It is nice to see the development.

It will be gladly explained again

There are no great requirements to be active in the learning aid.

However, continuity is important, according to headmistress Ute Meub.

Usually the children work with the same adults.

In addition, you should “of course enjoy being with children.

And it's definitely good if you have patience, ”says Ina Frömmrich.

Because it can happen that you have to explain the same thing over and over again.

“Ms. Frommrich, it fell out of my head again,” a child once said to her, says the tutor, and laughs.

Then it will just be explained again.

"I believe that it is very fulfilling, voluntary work," believes Meub, who advocates getting involved despite the current situation.

The necessary hygiene is ensured in the school.
