In Lithuania, the Christian Conservative Fatherland Federation won the parliamentary elections.
The opposition party is expected to receive 50 of the 141 seats in parliament after the second round of elections.
This was announced by the electoral commission after counting almost all electoral districts.
Like the German Christian Democrats, the Vaterlandsbund belongs to the EPP Group in the European Parliament.
The second strongest force in the Baltic EU and NATO country, with 32 seats, will be the ruling Union of Farmers and Greens.
It is followed by the Social Democrats (13 seats) in front of two liberal parties: the Liberal Movement (13 seats) and the newly founded Freedom Party (eleven seats).
The populist Labor Party has ten seats and two of the previous three coalition partners of the Federation of Farmers and Greens have three seats each.
The voter turnout was reportedly 39.7 percent.
New government made up of conservatives and two liberal parties
A continuation of the existing government thus seems impossible.
According to the AFP news agency, the conservative ex-finance minister Ingrida Simonyte is expected to form a government with the support of the two liberal parties.
Almost 2.5 million voters were called to decide on the 68 outstanding direct mandates in the 141-seat Seimas parliament in Vilnius.
Even after the first ballot two weeks ago, the Conservatives were considered likely to be successful.
At that time, 70 seats were allocated according to proportional representation and three direct seats, the remaining 68 seats were decided in runoff elections on Sunday.
Strict corona protective measures were applied in the election.
In the days leading up to the vote and on election day, the number of new infections in Lithuania reached a record level.
Dealing with the pandemic and its consequences had also shaped the election campaign, which was determined by economic and socio-political issues.
