The first reaction of the main opposition coalition was to

reject the forms rather than the substance

of the matter.

Referents of Together for Change questioned the possibility of the Government moving forward with the suppression of the primaries, open, simultaneous and mandatory next year without consensus or with the accompaniment of some allies.

They considered it a

"change in the rules of the game"

of the electoral system, which in case of materialization will be "unilateral" and for "political convenience."

Legislators from the space made up of the PRO, the UCR, the Civic Coalition and leaders of Peronism had unsuccessfully promoted reforms to law 26,571 in 2019, sanctioned in 2009 after the electoral defeat of Kircherism that year.

In recent months, members of these parties began to evaluate

alternatives to organize inmates

after perceiving that the Government could suspend the PASO, although without yet defining a specific mechanism.

Clarín's

revelation

this Sunday once again set off the alarms in opposition camps.

A man votes on August 11, 2019, in the PASO.

“The fundamental condition is that the rules of the game of democracy, which are elections, must be agreed upon with an agreement between all parties.

It cannot be a single party deciding what the rules are.

If not,

the field is inclined in favor of the interests of some

, ”Patricia Bullrich-president of PRO- told this newspaper.

Alfredo Cornejo, head of radicalism, expressed himself in a similar sense.

“Our position is that the rules of the game should not be changed, this naturally is.

The ruling party

accommodates the rules at its convenience,

"

the former governor of Mendoza and current deputy, last year promoter of an initiative to remove the STEP in cases where there was no competition, by case in the category

, warned before

Clarín's

query.

President.

The scenario will be different in 2021, with legislative elections and probably internal elections - at least on some fronts - in most of the districts.

“The rules of the game cannot be changed from one day to the next,

unilaterally and at the whim

and mere speculation of the ruling party.

That the Government stops being irresponsible and adding uncertainty ”, Maximiliano Ferraro pointed out along the same lines.

"They enable casinos and soccer, but we do not go back to school and now we could not choose in the PASO either," added the head of the Civic Coalition and the bloc of that party in Deputies.

The Government is evaluating the elimination of PASO next year, due to the economic crisis - the primary ones will have an estimated cost of about $ 12 billion - and the pandemic, since even if the vaccine is approved, the process will cover most of the population will take months.

The opposition referents assured that until now they have not received from officials or legislators of the Frente de Todos a communication or an informal notice of the intention to suppress them to start a negotiation.

“We had been perceiving it, but nobody told us anything.

We are not saying that there cannot be changes

, although they have to be consensual.

It is not so that they take it out with 130 votes ”, they put as an example of an adjusted number in Deputies.

As it is an electoral reform, the ruling party will need to collect at least 129 positives.

“The problem is that they don't negotiate.

They gather the votes and when they have them they advance ”, considered another leader of the space, with the debate rekindled this Sunday.

“The reasons seem

more political than health

.

It is a complicated issue that will have to be evaluated well, it will lead to a lot of debate in the coalition ”, advanced a legislator from the moderate sector, referenced in Horacio Rodríguez Larreta.

Patricia Bullrich, president of PRO.

The City, the province of Buenos Aires and Córdoba appear among the most complicated districts for Juntos por el Cambio in case there is no STEP next year.

Opposition leaders also indicated that it would imply a difficulty for the Frente de Todos, due to its internal bids.
