A tropical depression east of Mexico strengthened Sunday morning and is now Tropical Storm Zeta that could hit the US Gulf Coast by midweek.

Zeta could be or would be close to hurricane strength as it approaches the northern Gulf Coast on Wednesday, and could bring storm surge, rain and wind impacts in areas from Louisiana to northwest Florida.

It is the 27th named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, and is along with 2005 as the most active hurricane season on record, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

#Zeta has formed in the NW Caribbean - the 27th named storm of the 2020 Atlantic #hurricane season to date and earliest forming 27th Atlantic named storm on record.

If it makes landfall in Louisiana, Zeta would become the fifth named storm to do so this year, setting a record.

On Sunday morning Zeta had sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and was moving north at just 1 km / h.

The storm was about 474 kilometers southeast of Cozumel.

It is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Tuesday morning.

Zeta is forecast to make landfall Wednesday between central Louisiana and southwest Florida as a strong tropical storm.

“While the current NHC forecast indicates that the system should weaken to below hurricane strength before making landfall, users are reminded that strong tropical storms can still produce significant storm surge, rain, and wind throughout from the northern Gulf coast, "the National Hurricane Center said on Sunday.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said the state must prepare for the potential impact of Zeta as it works to help the areas impacted by Laura and Delta.

"As we have seen in this hurricane season, a tropical threat during the current covid-19 emergency is challenging, but something we can handle," Edwards said in a tweet.

"We must roll up our sleeves, as we always do, and prepare for a potential shock in Louisiana," Edwards said.

State of Mexico could suffer storm surge

Zeta could be close to or in hurricane strength as it approaches Mexico's Yucatan state late Monday morning.

Dangerous storm surge will raise water levels up to 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels along the immediate shoreline in the hurricane warning area near and north of where the center makes landfall on the Peninsula. of Yucatan.

There is a tropical storm warning in effect for Pinar del Río, Cuba.

There is a tropical storm watch from Tulum to Río Lagartos and Cozumel, Mexico.

A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours.

A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

Could set a record for Louisiana storms

If Zeta makes landfall in Louisiana, it would be the fifth named storm to do so this season.

It would be a new record for that state in terms of the most landfalls in a season.

The previous storms to make landfall were Cristóbal, Laura, Marco and Delta.

Additionally, it would tie the record for the most landfalls in any state during a season (Florida in 2005).

These statistics only count toward one landfall per storm per state.

Zeta would also be the 11th named storm to make landfall in the continental US this season, which is the most in a year.

The previous storms were Bertha, Cristóbal, Fay, Hanna, Isaías, Laura, Marco, Sally, Beta and Delta.

It is unusual for multiple storms to hit the same location in the same season, but it does happen.

For example, Frances and Jeanne reached the southern tip of Hutchinson Island in Florida in 2004. Harvey arrived in Louisiana in 2017 relatively close to where Cindy had made landfall.

Two storms have made landfall within 30 miles of each other, including Hermine and Colin in 2016 in Florida, Ike and Edouard in 2008 in Texas, and Katrina and Cindy in 2005 in Louisiana.
