How to explain the sharp drop in unemployment in the third quarter?

2020-10-27T14:41:58.402Z

DECRYPTION - After a historic increase in the second quarter, the number of unemployed fell by 11.5% in the third.

The decline in unemployment that began in recent months is continuing gradually.

In the third quarter of 2020, the number of job seekers registered in category A of Pôle emploi (without any activity) fell by 475,900 in June, a decrease of 11.5% compared to the second quarter.

This makes it the strongest quarterly drop ever recorded by the statistical service attached to the Ministry of Labor, the Dares.

After a historic increase of 815,500 in the second quarter, the number of category A registrants is therefore decreasing to now stand at 3,673,000.

If such figures give rise to enthusiasm in this gloomy climate, it is nevertheless advisable to remain a certain caution.

First, because they do not overshadow the effects of the crisis on employment and the 9.5% increase in unemployed in this same category over one year.

Secondly, because these results mainly stem from a switch between the different categories of Pôle Emploi.
