The head of the Spiritual Assembly of Russia's Muslims, Mufti Albert Karganov, condemned the recent positions and statements that were offensive to beliefs and religious symbols that were made by French President Emmanuel Macron under the pretext of freedom of opinion and belief and freedom of the press.
"Macron's stances and statements that are insulting to Islamic religious beliefs and symbols are a provocation to the entire Islamic world," Krganov was quoted by Novosti news agency as saying.
The Mufti of Chechnya, Salah Hajji Megiyev, described Macron's actions as an attack on Islam.
Macron had defended the "Charlie Hebdo" newspaper reprinting offensive cartoons of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), claiming that this matter came within the framework of freedom of expression.
