Lawmakers from two U.S. House of Representatives factions announced today (Tuesday) that they have submitted a bill aimed at allowing Israel to purchase one of the United States' most advanced weapons - the MOP bomb.
It is the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the hands of the US military.
Legislators, Democrat Josh Guttheimer and Republican Brian Master, have announced that a first debate on the legislation will take place as early as next Friday.
"We must ensure that our ally, the State of Israel, is sufficiently equipped to deal with the threats around it, including the possibility that Iran is armed with nuclear weapons. As a result, I am proud to introduce bipartisan legislation that will ensure Israel's ability to confront Iran and Hezbollah. Of our historic ally with the help of ammunition penetrating bunkers, "Guttheimer wrote.
The MOP - which stands for "massive armor penetrating" - is a smart bomb weighing 13 and a half tons, manufactured by the Boeing company and capable of penetrating underground bunkers at a depth of 60 meters.
The purchase of the bomb could help Israel attack nuclear facilities and missile sites deep in Iran, as well as damage Hezbollah missile depots and the terrorist organization's launch facilities deep in the Lebanese mountains.
The decision to sell such advanced ammunition to Israel depends on the consultation of the US Department of Defense and the consent of all relevant parties, including senior Israeli officials, in order to verify the Israeli need to purchase the bomb.
