It was relatively close, but it was enough for the governing mayor of Berlin: According to SPIEGEL information, the majority of members in the SPD constituency of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf voted for Michael Müller as a candidate for the Bundestag.
In the internal survey, he prevailed with 58.4 percent against his state secretary Sawsan Chebli, who received 40.2 percent of the vote.
2459 SPD members were called to take part in the decision.
The turnout was 59.2 percent.
The head of government is standing in the Berlin constituency of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf for the SPD in the federal election in 2021.
At the beginning of January, Müller had announced that he wanted to hand over the state chairmanship to Family Minister Franziska Giffey and parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh.
Giffey should also run as a top candidate in the House of Representatives election next year.
The Berlin comrades had maneuvered themselves into an extraordinary position.
In the constituency of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, not only was a head of government and his state secretary fighting for the favor of the members, two worlds collided: the old and the new SPD.
The governing mayor stands for the old SPD.
Müller has a classic ox tour behind him, has been a social democrat for 39 years, and has been politics in Berlin since 1989.
It is likely to have been chosen by many long-term members who register exactly how many barbecues and evening events an applicant appears at.
Chebli, on the other hand, stands for a new, progressive SPD.
The State Secretary was born to Palestinian parents in 1978 in Berlin.
She was a research assistant in the Bundestag and deputy spokeswoman for the then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
In 2016, Müller brought her to the Senate Chancellery, as the representative of the State of Berlin at the federal level and State Secretary for Civic Commitment and International Affairs.
The social democrat is committed to refugees and against racism.
She is present on social media and is considered a polarizing, argumentative politician.
