Nuremberg wanted to become European Capital of Culture in 2025.
Now the decision has been made - and Bavaria's second largest city was not selected.
Nuremberg - The Nuremberg application team
reacted with
disappointment after choosing
Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025
.
"I am very sad," said Mayor
Marcus König
(CSU *) on Wednesday.
“It is of course bitter for us.”
Nürnberg * had applied for the title alongside Chemnitz, Magdeburg, Hanover and Hildesheim.
The European jury made the decision on Wednesday after an
application
round that had to take place virtually due to the Corona * crisis.
The federal and state governments must now officially appoint the German Capital of Culture in 2025.
Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough for # Nuremberg: The jury of @LaenderKultur has just announced that @Stadt_Chemnitz will be #Culture Capital of Europe in 2025.
We warmly congratulate #Chemnitz and wish the city a great year 2025!

Chemnitz becomes European Capital of Culture 2025: disappointment in Nuremberg
Bavaria's second largest city had high
hopes
.
In addition to attracting European attention, the title is also associated with funding of millions for cultural projects.
Under the motto “Past Forward”, Nürnberg * wanted to connect the past with the future with more than 60 projects.
Above all, the city wanted to tap the creative and artistic potential beyond clichés such as
gingerbread, Christkind and bratwurst
.
The European Union has been awarding the title to two countries at the same time since 1985.
The second cultural capital should be Slovenia in 2025.
Germany was last represented in 2010 with Essen and the Ruhr area.
West Berlin (1988) and Weimar (1999) also had the title.
