Pathologists have autopsied Covid 19 victims and gained important insights.
These could enable more successful treatment of patients.
The study
"Molecular profile of a killer"
provides important information on a fatal course of
Covid-19 disease
.
There are two ways
to die
from
Covid-19 *
.
The new knowledge can now be applied in the treatment of
Covid 19 patients
.
Liestal -
"Molecular profile of a killer"
.
It sounds like the title of a new crime novel that will soon be in bookstores.
In fact, it is the summary of a study on the fatal effects of
Sars-CoV-2 *
in the body.
It was published in the science
magazine
"Nature Communications"
.
The last author of the work -
Kirsten Mertz from Cantonal Hospital Baselland
in
Switzerland
- has now
commented
on the findings.
The molecular pathologist is one of the first to
perform
autopsies on
Covid-19
victims.
She told
Focus
online that at the beginning of the
pandemic,
“they had absolutely no idea what to expect.
"It was a completely new situation for us
to investigate
victims of this
highly contagious and unknown virus
." However, as the results of the study now show, the examinations were urgently needed.
Between March and May, Mertz and her colleagues carried out and evaluated a total of 21 autopsies.
The autopsied victims were mostly high-risk patients (male, older than 70 and with previous illnesses).
Transcriptomic, histologic and cellular profiling of post-mortem # COVID19 lung tissues revealed 2 patterns of immune responses.

During the complex autopsies,
two abnormalities
could be identified very quickly
.
On the one hand, there were deceased who showed severe damage, especially in the lungs, and on the other,
Covid 19 victims
who showed only minor organ damage.
This finding is amazing because it shows that people who contracted the same
virus
died from different consequences.
The study shows that one group of victims had a high viral load in the lungs with little damage at the same time.
The other group, however, had little or no virus in their lungs.
In return, the lung damage was enormous.
The course and duration of the
Covid 19 disease
were therefore different in the two identifiable groups.
Coronavirus: There are two ways to die from Covid-19
In an interview with
Focus
ONLINE, Mertz stated that the group of patients who had a high viral load in the lungs
died
shortly after the
infection
because the
immune system was
unable to fight
the
virus
successfully.
In the case of the
patients in
the other group, the immune system was
good at fighting
the
virus
.
However, in this case, those affected died a little later from the
lung damage
caused by an overreaction of the
immune system
.
Covid-19: Increased blood clotting as a risk factor for severe organ damage
In the two groups, however, it is not a question of two fundamentally different
courses of the disease,
but of one course of the disease - only some patients died earlier than others.
The
research team has
not yet been able to find out
the reason for this
.
Only one connection was noticed: the group in which severe
organ damage could be
found had increased
blood clotting
, which led to clots.
This was not the case in the other group.
The findings of the study
“Molecular Profile of a Killer”
are
of great importance
in relation to the fight against the
pandemic
.
This is because there are ideas for different
treatment measures
for patients with severe
disease courses
.
In patients with a high viral load in the lungs, antivirals would have to be used first.
In the later phase of the disease, in which there can be an overreaction, on the other hand, special anti-inflammatory drugs would have to be used, which prevent an overreaction of the immune system and thus prevent the occurrence of tissue damage.
Coronavirus: "The virus was and is a killer"
Another important finding could be drawn from the study: a high viral load is particularly risky.
According to Mertz, a high virus load, especially in the risk group, could considerably worsen the course.
That's why
wearing a mask is so important
.
You may have a
infection
may not completely prevent, but it reduces the recorded viral load during infection.
Mertz does not see
any difference to the current victims of
Covid 19 disease
. She told Focus ONLINE that the virus has not changed much: "
It was and it is a killer
." It is therefore important to bear in mind that people who do not belong to the risk group can also suffer from a severe course of the disease .
