Trump's run-up, overtakes Biden in Florida

2020-10-28T21:03:05.034Z

For the first time in the average of RealClearPolitics polls, Donald Trump surpasses Joe Biden in Florida, one of the states in the balance, albeit with a meager + 0.4%: 48.2% to 47.8%. (HANDLE)

Less than a week before the election day, Donald Trump continues his frenzied run-up to blows of oceanic rallies but the road remains uphill, even if in recent days he has gnawed something: in the average of RealClearPolitics polls, the gap from Joe Biden is down to 7.1% nationally while the gap in the main 'battleground States' also narrowed, starting with Florida, where for the first time the president took the lead with + 0.4%. The gap that separates him from the challenger is also small in Pennsylvania (+ 3.8%), Arizona (+ 2.4%) and North Carolina (+ 0.7%), all states in the balance. A wake-up call that prompted the Democrats to change tactics, insisting on early voting in person, as Biden himself did today in his Wilmington in Delaware, but now urging them to avoid that by post for fear that the ballots will not be delivered within the terms set by the various States. More than 73 million people have already expressed their preference so far, including nearly 50 by post, a method largely used by Democratic voters. But now it's too late to rely on the post office. The move was also prompted by a recent Supreme Court ruling, which rejected the decision of a Wisconsin state court - another battleground state - to extend the validity of the postal vote up to six days after election day. A ruling that risks setting a precedent even in the legal battles still ongoing in other crucial states, such as Pennsylvania and North Carolina, where the courts have extended the validity of the postal vote to three and nine days after November 3, respectively. Dems are worried about the reasoning written by one of the Supreme Court justices, Brett Kavanaugh (a Trump-appointed Conservative), that it is up to state parliaments to define the rules for presidential elections and federal courts are entitled to intervene to ensure that the state courts "do not rewrite state electoral laws." A motivation that refers to the opinion of the former head of the Supreme Court William Rehnquist in the judgment on the electoral dispute in 2000 in Florida between George W. Bush and Al Gore, won by the former after the manual recount ordered by the Supreme Court of the Sushine. The risk is that not many votes delivered after the day of the consultation are counted, presumably largely dem.
