The Knesset will convene at noon (Thursday) for a special meeting, marking the 25th anniversary of the assassination of Prime Minister and Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Along with Knesset members, the meeting will be attended by President Reuven Rivlin, Deputy Supreme Court President Justice Hanan Meltzer, Jewish Agency Chairman Yitzhak Herzog and representatives of the Rabin family. Among others, Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will speak. Opposition leader Yair Lapid and Economy and Industry Minister Amir Peretz.

Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir on November 4, 1995, at a rally in support of the peace agreements held at Kings of Israel Square in Tel Aviv, under the slogan "Yes to peace, no to violence."

The memorial events opened with the state memorial service "Ner Yitzhak" held at the President's House, in the presence of President Reuven Rivlin and members of the Rabin family, who later went to the grave of the assassinated prime minister.

At the ceremony, Rivlin warned of the growing political rift.

"I am afraid that the high flames within us endanger our home, of all of us. Endanger the Israeli fabric we have built so hard," he said.

The president stressed that Rabin's assassination was "political" and that "the prime minister's despicable killer thought he had legitimacy to eliminate, in effect, the existence of sharp and profound political disagreement."

Rivlin warned of violence in Israeli society and warned of another political assassination.

"25 years later the country is torn like a Red Sea between two camps and hatred is bubbling under our feet," he said.

"There can be no signs calling for the deaths of civilians, for journalists to live under threats, for civilians to beat civilians, for severe verbal violence against police officers. There can be no one who dares to imagine a political assassination of a prime minister, minister, president, MK, possible at all".
