In the case of a fatal knife attack in Nice, the Paris anti-terrorist prosecutor has taken over the investigation.

Among other things, it was about the allegation of murder in connection with a terrorist project, the authority confirmed.

According to the mayor of the city, Christian Estrosi, at least two people died in the act in the Church of Notre-Dame.

Another person was seriously injured.

Everything points to a terrorist attack, said Estrosi on Twitter.

He later said in an interview with the broadcaster BFMTV that the alleged perpetrator had shouted "Allahu Akbar" several times.

According to his Paris office, French President Emmanuel Macron wants to travel to Nice to get an idea of the situation on site.

The alleged perpetrator was arrested, according to the mayor.

A policewoman said, according to the AP news agency, the perpetrator was injured in the arrest and was taken to a hospital.

France's Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin confirmed the incident without giving details, saying that an emergency meeting had been convened.

Nice was hit by a terrorist attack back in 2016.

At that time, 86 people died when an assassin with a truck raced into a crowd on the Promenade des Anglais boulevard.

Darmanin had warned several times of a high risk of terrorism in the country.

Just two weeks ago a teacher was beheaded in a suburb of Paris.

The crime had caused horror across the country.

Tens of thousands took to the streets to show their solidarity.

After the fact, French President Macron had expressed criticism of Islam and defended Mohammed cartoons.

There were calls for boycotts of French products in several Arab countries.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also called for a boycott and sharply attacked Macron.
