The discovery of a grave with 59 bodies in Guanajuato again reveals the savage violence in the State

2020-10-29T16:32:54.011Z

The National Commission for the Search of Persons finds the remains in the municipality of Salvatierra, a month after detecting 17 plastic bags with human remains in the city of Irapuato

At least 59 bodies, most of them identified as young men and among which between 10 and 15 women were detected, have been found in several clandestine graves on the outskirts of the municipality of Salvatierra, a small enclave in the State of Guanajuato, in central Mexico.

"It may be one of the greatest finds in the State of Guanajuato so far," said the head of the State Search Commission

,

Héctor Díaz Esquerra.

The Commission suspects other “possible positive points”, so the search is not over.

The discovery of these clandestine graves comes just a month after the State Attorney's Office announced the detection of at least 15 bodies buried in plastic bags on the outskirts of the city of Irapuato, one of the largest in the state.

The war for control of the squares between two criminal organizations and the ineffectiveness of the security forces have made Guanajuato - which today coexists with almost 14 murders a day - into the most violent state in Mexico in the last two years.

The raking began on October 20 at various farms in the San Juan neighborhood, on the outskirts of Salvatierra, after a request submitted by relatives of disappeared persons.

More than 80 people from civil associations, family groups, the National Guard, the Secretary of Defense and both the state and national commissions to search for people are involved in the operation.

“These 59 people have a first and last name, a family that is looking for them.

If you know of someone who has not reported a disappearance, come to us so that we can carry out genetic tests, with or without a complaint ”, asked the head of the National Commission for the Search for Persons, Karla Quintana Osuna.

Guanajuato has been experiencing a war between bosses for two years in which the strong presence of the National Guard has proven to be ineffective.

Last July began with the murder of 24 people in a rehabilitation center in the city of Irapuato, a few days after a thunderous operation captured 31 alleged collaborators of the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, of which 26 were released. the next day.

The Mexican government had set its sights on the battle against huachicol, fuel theft, and in a year tripled the presence of the National Guard in the State, from 2,000 troops in August 2019 to 6,699 in July of this year, according to the state government reported in the middle of that month.

According to the National Search Commission, at least 2,483 people have been reported missing and 3,438 have been murdered in Guanajuato so far in 2020 alone. The theft of fuel and the dispute over territories of influence between the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels and Santa Rosa de Lima have caused such levels of violence that the State went from being one of the most prosperous in Mexico to the most violent in the country in just two years.
