Girl rescued from rubble after 65 hours of earthquake in Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -

A three-year-old girl was rescued from a collapsed apartment building in Izmir, Turkey, on Friday after the strong earthquake in the Aegean Sea, according to Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency.

The girl, identified by authorities as Elif Perincek, was rescued this Monday morning, more than 65 hours after the devastating earthquake.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said Perincek's mother and two other people were rescued earlier, but unfortunately one of his brothers died.

Koca said later Monday that the three-year-old had been taken to the hospital and was being treated in intensive care.

He said he had not sustained any serious fractures or muscle crush injuries and was in good condition.

News of the rescue came just hours after another girl was found alive under the rubble and brought to the surface safely by rescue teams.

Turkey's Emergency and Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) said 14-year-old Idil Sirin was rescued after spending more than 58 hours trapped under a collapsed building.

In phone video showing the dramatic moment of Sirin's rescue, dozens of onlookers can be heard cheering enthusiastically as she is freed from the rubble.

The minor received first aid at the scene before being transferred to a local hospital, according to Anadolu.

At least 91 people were killed and 994 injured after the earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 7.0 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which struck the Aegean Sea on Friday, shaking parts of Greece. and Turkey.

The earthquake struck 14 kilometers northeast of the town of Néon Karlovásion on Samos, the USGS reported, at a relatively shallow depth of 21 kilometers, making its impact felt powerfully at ground level around the epicenter.

A total of 20 buildings were badly damaged in Izmir by the earthquake, according to Izmir Mayor Tunc Soyer, most of them in the middle-class Bayrakli district.

More than 900 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial earthquake, 42 of them with a magnitude greater than 4.0, Turkey's Disaster Agency said.

The earthquake also triggered what authorities called a "mini-tsunami", causing streets to flood on Friday in parts of Turkey's broader Izmir province, as well as in Samos.
