Brenner base tunnel inlet: hope for better noise protection

The Brenner Base Tunnel is expected to go into operation from 2028.

Part of the northern approach is to roll through the Munich district.

The rail network is being upgraded, the residents' communities fear noise.

  • Nordzulauf should lead through the communities of Haar and Grasbrunn.

  • Those affected fear insufficient noise protection and poor S-Bahn frequency.

  • 500 freight trains are expected to roll through the district every day.

District

- From Helsinki in Finland to Valetta on the island of Malta: The so-called Scandinavia-Mediterranean Corridor comprises railway lines in seven EU countries with a total length of 9400 kilometers.

The aim is to shift freight traffic from road to rail.

At the center of this axis is the Brenner Base Tunnel, which is expected to go into operation from 2028, according to the plan.

In order to get the freight trains to the Brenner (more) quickly, the rail network must be optimized there.

This also affects the district of Munich, through which part of the Brenner northern inlet is to roll: in the communities of Haar and Grasbrunn.

Grasbrunn's Mayor Korneder wants binding information.

Where exactly do the routes run, what problems and obstacles arise on site?

20 regional forums have already been held on the Brenner-Nordzulauf project, as well as a dialogue forum initiated by DB Netz for the first time in July for the planning area Munich - Trudering - Grafing.

Opinions vary as to the usefulness of these forums.

“It was enough for me.

I found the flow of information to be very honest and transparent, ”says Mayor Andreas Bukowski (CSU).

His Grasbrunn official colleague Klaus Korneder (SPD), however, assessed the gatherings with skepticism: “So far there is nothing on the table to discuss.

I am growing impatient because no binding information has been made available about what is supposed to happen in Grasbrunn. "

The route should be lashed in 2021.

The final route should be lashed as early as 2021, emotional debates about detailed questions mainly affect the region around Rosenheim and the Inn valley up to the state border near Kiefersfelden.

The route between Trudering and Grafing (Ebersberg district) is unlikely to be shaken anymore: No new construction would be necessary here, the route, which has already been extended to four tracks, could be used.

"That makes sense, nothing will change that," says the transport policy spokesman for the Greens in the state parliament, Markus Büchler.

Worry about a slowdown in the S-Bahn

The routing in this country is as good as through, but two other aspects concern those affected in the district: on the one hand, the noise protection and on the other hand, a possible deterioration in the speed of the S-Bahn.

Block compaction is what it means in technical jargon - and specifically for the district: up to 500 freight trains with a length of up to 740 meters per day should roll through Haar and Grasbrunn.

This is based on digitization in the form of the “European Train Control System” (ETCS), which allows more efficient utilization of the rail network.

Will this work?

The Haarer FDP local chief Peter Siemsen does not believe in it: “The existing network of the Munich metropolitan region is already reaching its capacity limits.

Even with the establishment of the ETCS, a smooth flow of traffic control remains doubtful. "

MdL Büchler (Greens): "Nobody has to fear the increased number of trains."

Markus Büchler, who always argues well when it comes to transport issues, tries to refute the concerns.

"Nobody has to fear this increase in trains," says the member of the state parliament from Oberschleißheim.

Due to an EU noise protection directive, freight trains would be quieter from January 1, 2021 - those who do not retrofit their wagons are no longer allowed to drive.

“If limit values are nevertheless exceeded, you are entitled to noise barriers.

They are old and patchy in the district - the municipalities can count on improvements from the railway, ”says Büchler.

“I don't want to play it down, freight trains are annoying and loud.

But with us in the district it won't be so serious. "

Büchler considers the fact that more freight trains are at the expense of the S-Bahn frequency to be unfounded: “There are four tracks, two for the S-Bahn and two for freight traffic.

With shorter train sequences, the ETCS increases capacity by up to 20 percent.

I cannot imagine that freight will displace passenger traffic. "

Mayor Bukowski in Haar calls for better noise protection.

It was precisely this aspect that was mentioned in the dialogue forum, reports Bukowski.

"That made me prick up my ears," says the mayor of Haar.

“Because of the block compression, a deterioration in the speed of the S-Bahn was not planned, it was said, but it was not ruled out either.

We will not allow that under any circumstances and demand corresponding commitments, both from the railways and from the Ministry of Transport. ”And when it comes to noise protection, hair must“ get significant improvements, that is essential ”.

2.5 million trucks cross the Brenner Pass every year, the majority of which are to be shifted to rail over the long term.

“Everyone agrees that this is desirable.

But nobody wants the freight train traffic on their doorstep, ”says Andreas Bukowski, describing the conflict.

“We have to die one death.” Provided that the issues of noise protection and S-Bahn frequency are adequately taken into account, the community of Haar will not stand in the way of the international Brenner-Nordzuauf project.
