Through the voice of the biggest sellers of books, the collective “Sauvons Nos Libraires” asks the President of the Republic to reconsider his positions on these businesses, whose activity is, they believe, of primary need in the land of the Enlightenment.

The future of bookstores is still threatened by re-containment.

The issue has been well understood by certain politicians, who have recently spoken out on the absence of measures taken to avoid the monopoly of Amazon and other major digital platforms.

In a video published on November 3, 19 writers, grouped together under the collective name “Sauvons Nos Libraires”, directly call on the President of the Republic to save booksellers and their businesses.

Thus, Agnès Abécassis, Barbara Abel, Olivier Bal, Nicolas Beuglet, Mireille Calmel, Maxime Chattam, Tatiana de Rosnay, Virginie Grimaldi, Nicolas Lebel, Marc Lévy, Henri Loevenbruck, Mathias Malzieu, Ian Manook, Bernard Minier, Guillaume Musso, Olivier Norek , Niko Tackian, Franck Thilliez and Bernard Werber recite in front of the camera a message of support but also of prevention.

First of course, because we authors, whether we are known or less known, we cannot live without bookstores

, they explain.

But also because for readers, nothing is more important than the wise advice of a passionate bookseller.

And finally because we cannot allow this player so essential to our cultural and economic life to disappear.

It is urgent, more than ever, to act to save our bookstores

. ”

The collective also encourages consumers to change the way they buy.

Not by going on digital platforms, but by getting closer to their booksellers.

So today, we invite our readers to continue by all possible means to buy their book in bookstores.

Particularly thanks to click and collect, in French: clic et collect.

”An unusual method for some consumers and yet necessary for the survival of these cultural businesses.

Before a formal interpellation of the president and his government.

"

And we ask the government to find a solution for booksellers, while respecting the necessary sanitary measures, because reading, Mr. President, is indeed a vital activity in the land of the Enlightenment

," recalls the collective. .

It is one of the fundamental guarantors of the freedom of thought so dear to our country.

A country without booksellers is a dying democracy.

All together, let's save our booksellers.

The intervention of the 19 authors, masks on the nose, is part of a continuation of the struggle of this collective created since June.

With the hashtag #SauvonsNosLibraires and their website, they hope to help bookstores find their audience, one way or another.

Since the start of the second confinement, many other voices have challenged the closure of bookstores including the writer Philippe Claudel who called for disobedience.
