Republican officials have expressed conflicting views on U.S. President Donald Trump's unfounded statements about the "theft" of the election by Democrats and Joe Biden.

Republican Sen. Pat Tommy of Pennsylvania, whose state may win the race, said the president's claims were "very disturbing."

In an interview with CBS, Tommy said that "no one has shown me any evidence of widespread corruption or fraud."

He added that "the president's speech last night was very disturbing to me because he made very serious allegations, without providing evidence to that effect."

He said, "I voted for President Trump. I supported President Trump. I want the next president to be a person who has legitimately won the Electoral College and I will accept whoever it is."

Trump, who has been complaining for weeks about postal votes, sharpened his accusations on Thursday night when he said in the White House that the vote count was unfair and corrupt.

Trump did not back up or elaborate on his claims, and government officials and federal officials did not report any significant incidents of vote-rigging.

Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney also criticized Trump, writing on Twitter that "the president has the right to request a recount, to call for a vote on irregularities when there is evidence and to exhaust legal remedies."

Romney, who was the Republican candidate for president of the United States in 2012, also noted that "he is wrong when he says that elections are fake, corrupt or stolen - thereby harming freedom here and around the world."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell maintained a more neutral tone, and other Republicans called on Trump to fight to defeat Biden.

"Every legal vote should be counted," McConnell tweeted.

"All parties should have access to oversee the procedure."

When asked about it at a press conference in Kentucky later in the day, he declined to elaborate further.

"Every valid vote should be counted."

The majority leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, sharpened his tone and insisted that Trump "win" the election, despite the Republican president's vote count and the lag in the number of voters.

The split shows Trump's continued grip on the party, especially after the Republicans' success in the House of Representatives and Senate races that ran with the president.
