In the mayor election in Stuttgart on Sunday, none of the applicants prevailed.
In the first ballot, the CDU candidate Frank Nopper was ahead of the preliminary results on Sunday evening with 31.8 percent of the vote, with Green politician Veronika Kienzle coming in second with 17.2 percent.
Whoever succeeds the green incumbent Fritz Kuhn will now have to be decided in a second round of elections on November 29th, as no one was able to achieve an absolute majority.
The social democrat Marian Schreier, who appeared as an independent applicant, took third place (15 percent) ahead of Stuttgart city councilor Hannes Rockenbauch from the SÖS / Linke parliamentary group (14.0) and the official SPD candidate Martin Körner (9.8) in the other places.
Michael Ballweg, head of the corona-denying "lateral thinking" platform, only received 2.6 percent of the votes, while AfD candidate Malte Kaufmann was 2.2.
The turnout was 49 percent.
After eight years in office, Kuhn surprisingly announced in January that he would not run for a further term.
A total of 14 candidates had applied for his successor.
In the second ballot on November 29th, the previous applicants can run again, but theoretically new candidates can also be nominated.
In this ballot, a simple majority of the votes is sufficient for a victory.
The outcome of the mayor election in the state capital is eagerly awaited against the background of the state elections in Baden-Württemberg next spring.
